Biography
ِِِAya Gamil is a visual artist born in Cairo in 1996. Her practice centers on the body as a site of memory, accumulation, and witness. Through painting, she approaches the body not as a stable form, but as a shifting field shaped by lived experience, where traces emerge, dissolve, and reconfigure over time.
Her work considers memory not as recollection, but as a continuous process of rewriting shaped by the present self. Figures appear suspended between presence and disappearance, carrying residues of emotional, physical, and historical experience.
Gamil has presented her work in several exhibitions in Cairo, including Visual Narratives by ART74 at the Cairo Opera House during the 5th Cairo Film Festival; Women Written by Women by Art D’Egypte at Access Art Space; Baboon Symposium by ALDAU Add Art; and Thorny Edges at Medrar for Contemporary Art.
Her practice also extends into publication. One of her paintings was featured on the cover of Akhbar Al-Adab in a special issue on Shadi Abdel Salam. She designed the cover for The Tavern of the Black Cat by Naguib Mahfouz, published by Diwan, where image and text intersect as parallel forms of memory rather than illustration
