Biography
Aya Gamil (b. 1996, Cairo, Egypt) is a visual artist whose practice engages with accumulation, memory, and the traces left by lived experience. Through painting and material experimentation, making becomes a process of release where forms emerge, dissolve, and transform through cycles of pressure, persistence, and change.
Moving between bodily presence, organic forms, landscapes, and imagined environments, her work reflects on what remains rather than what has passed. Rather than representing experience directly, Gamil traces its residue, approaching art-making as an act of witnessing, accumulation, and continuous transformation.
Her work considers how emotions inhabit surfaces, materials, and spaces, carrying traces of experience beyond fixed narratives or singular forms. Images repeatedly shift between appearance and disappearance, suggesting unstable territories shaped by memory, tension, and transformation.
For Gamil, making is less concerned with reconstruction and more with what persists what accumulates, lingers, and continues to reshape experience over time.
